Participation Fees for U.S. Community Colleges

As with all JSTOR participants, community colleges have a participation fee structure that includes two fees: an Archive Capital Fee (ACF) and an Annual Access Fee (AAF). The ACF is a one-time-only fee designed to ensure that JSTOR has the necessary resources to meet its archival obligations as technology evolves. The AAF helps cover the recurring costs of updating the archive and maintaining access and support services for participating institutions.

JSTOR Classification for U.S. Community Colleges

In developing a method for fairly classifying participants, we have based JSTOR classifications on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This classification "groups American colleges and universities according to their missions," and thus offers an opportunity to relate fees to the degree to which an institution regards research as a fundamental aim. Using Carnegie classifications has the added appeal that they are well understood in the academic community and their assignment is done by a respected outside party.

All institutions classified by Carnegie as Associate of Arts are given the JSTOR classification of Community College.

Archive Capital Fee (ACF)

JSTOR recognizes that providing access to information is of primary importance to community college libraries and the ACF for U.S. Community Colleges reflects this understanding. Community colleges contribute an ACF upon licensing their first JSTOR collection. No ACF is required with the licensing of subsequent collections.

Annual Access Fees (AAF)

The Annual Access Fee is required and varies by collection. The AAF helps cover the recurring costs of updating the archive and maintaining access and support services for on-campus library users as well as off-campus users via your institution's access and authentication system.

For collections that are works in progress, such as the Arts & Sciences IV, Arts & Sciences V, Arts & Sciences Complement, Biological Sciences, and Business II Collections, the AAF will be prorated to reflect the number of titles available for access at the beginning of each year until the collection is completed.
