JSTOR Classifications for Government and Non-Profit Research Institutions

JSTOR has, with considerable feedback from this community established a new licensing methodology and fee structure that we believe will be appropriate to Government and Non-Profit Research Institutions. We arrived at a set of criteria with which to establish each institution's JSTOR class, ranging from Very Large to Very Small. These criteria are self-reported, much as are the classification criteria for the other communities that we serve.

The criteria we have selected are intended to approach two main considerations: (1) the research mission of the institution and (2) the level of the institutional support and commitment to research. Understanding these general criteria will help us to more fairly license many different types of research organizations, ranging from large organizations with a small research unit to very small organizations that are devoted solely to research.

There are five JSTOR classifications for Non-Academic Non-Profit Institutions: "Very Large", "Large," "Medium," "Small," and "Very Small." In order to determine the JSTOR classification for Government and Non-Profit Research Institutions, we consider the following five criteria:

  1. Total Staff of your organization/institution.
  2. Number of researchers and/or library staff at your organization/institution.
  3. Total Operating Budget of your organization/institution (latest year available).
  4. Materials Budget of the library of your organization/institution (latest year available).
  5. Number of active serials subscriptions (print and electronic) your organization/institution holds.

Below are tables showing each classification parameter and the weight associated with it:
