Basic Search FAQ

You can perform both simple and complex searches by using the Basic Search form.

  1. How do I use the Basic Search Form?

    1. Enter your search term(s) into the search box.
    2. Choose whether to include links to recent articles from other outside resources in your search results.
    3. Perform your search by selecting the "Search" button.
  2. How can I search for an exact phrase?

    Enter the phrase into the search box and insert double quote marks (") before and after the phrase. For example:

    "volcanic ash"

  3. How can I search for an author name?

    Enter au: into the search box, followed directly by the author name. For example:

    au:Smith
    au:"John Smith"
    au:(John W Smith)

  4. How can I search for words from an article title?

    Enter ti: into the search box, followed directly by the title words. For example:

    ti:(field flower)

  5. How can I search for words from an image caption?

    Enter ca: into the search box, followed directly by the words you wish to search for. For example:

    ca:"Moscow circus"

  6. How can I search only for content available within JSTOR?

    Uncheck the box for "Search for links to articles outside of JSTOR".

  7. How can I search only for full-length articles?

    Enter ty:fla into the search box.

  8. How can I search only within a specific journal?

    Enter jo: into the search box, followed directly by the journal title, or enter sn: into the search box followed directly by the ISSN. For example:

    jo:"Estuaries"
    sn:01608347
