New Features Update

We are pleased to provide an update of several new features to enhance searching and browsing within the JSTOR archive.

Linking Enhancements

JSTOR now offers linking functionality on article view and information pages. In addition to reference linking, forward links from an article to others in JSTOR are now displayed, along with links to articles by authors with the same first initial and last name. Forward links are also available via Google Scholar, so users may view cited articles not archived in JSTOR.

Search Engine Enhancements

In response to feedback, we have modified the JSTOR Advanced Search form. These enhancements were previewed in July 2006 by many users who confirmed that the new format allows more intuitively structured searches for optimal results. Along with the JSTOR Basic Search and Article Locator search options, the Advanced Search now includes full text, author, article title, abstract, and caption fields, and allows users to limit searches by date, article type, and discipline.

JSTOR/ARTstor Searching

ARTstor, a non-profit initiative founded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, provides a repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data to serve the scholarly community. To enhance research across JSTOR and ARTstor, users may now search both resources simultaneously, including JSTOR articles, JSTOR image captions, and ARTstor image metadata. Users at institutions that participate in both ARTstor and JSTOR may also see image thumbnails and click to view full-sized image and complete metadata in ARTstor.

Improved PDF Delivery and Highlighting

To improve article delivery, JSTOR has recently previewed a new OCR-backed, searchable PDF option for downloading and printing articles, which enables users to "search" or "find" words and phrases within the PDF version of articles and copy and paste portions of article text. The improved PDF delivery also facilitates the use of screen reading software (such as JAWS for Windows). Overall, the new format produces smaller, easily downloadable PDF files that improve the printing experience.

Users will also see search terms highlighted on JSTOR page images prior to viewing the article's PDF version. Along with the existing "Page of First Match", the new search term highlighting feature will allow users to see the search term more easily within the article text.

We encourage you to test these new features in the JSTOR Sandbox. For more information, please contact support@jstor.org.
